Scott Wills is a visual development and production artist specializing in animation backgrounds, notable projects he has been involved in are Samurai Jack, Ren & Stimpy, Star Wars: Clone Wars and Flushed Away. While he tends to work mostly with acrylics (And sometimes gouache), he also uses Photoshop for his digital works, sometimes combining the two together.
The range of styles he uses for his backgrounds are absolutely astounding (From semi-realistic to stylishly abstract, they are all highly detailed and gorgeous to look at), looking through his works, he can honestly paint backgrounds for any type of setting and in any type of style he so desires. He is perhaps one of the best acrylic handlers I have ever come across, being able to apply it in numerous methods that I hadn't thought were possible.
It is just fantastic to see how such gorgeous backgrounds for animations can still be created using traditional mediums, at times it's almost hard to tell them apart from digital ones.

Color thumbnails to figure out what sort of color scheme should be used for the real thing, and even those are done at a pretty small scale too. |
